It was first sold in 1906 by \u003ca href=\"\/boardgamepublisher\/28\/parker-brothers\"\u003eParker Brothers\u003c\/a\u003e.  The \u003cstrong\u003eRook\u003c\/strong\u003e deck is similar to a \u003ca class=\"\" href=\"\/wiki\/page\/standard_deck_playing_card_games#\"\u003estandard deck of cards\u003c\/a\u003e, but has only numbers from 1-14 in four colors (no face cards or card suits (spades, etc.)).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe standard game is a 4-player partnership game with the 1's, 2's, 3's, and 4's removed for a deck of 41 cards (with the \u003cstrong\u003eRook\u003c\/strong\u003e card).  Each hand, players bid for \u003cstrong\u003eTrump\u003c\/strong\u003e, and then the partnership that won the bid must make the amount of points bid in the hand.  Play of each trick is similar to \u003ca href=\"\/boardgame\/13337\/whist\"\u003eWhist\u003c\/a\u003e games like \u003ca href=\"\/boardgame\/2181\/bridge\"\u003eBridge\u003c\/a\u003e. The card led must be followed by a card of the same color.  A player may play a trump color if they have none of the color led.  The highest card of the color led wins the trick, unless the trick is trumped, and then the highest trump wins the trick.  The \u003cstrong\u003eRook\u003c\/strong\u003e card can be played at any time, and always wins the trick.  Unlike \u003ca href=\"\/boardgame\/13337\/whist\"\u003eWhist\u003c\/a\u003e or \u003ca href=\"\/boardgame\/2181\/bridge\"\u003eBridge\u003c\/a\u003e, the \u003cem\u003eamount\u003c\/em\u003e of tricks is not important, but certain \u003cem\u003ecount\u003c\/em\u003e cards (5's, 10's, 14's, and the \u003cstrong\u003eRook\u003c\/strong\u003e card) taken in tricks are worth points, which is how the game is scored.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe standard game is 4-player, but there are variants for 2-player and 3-player in the rules, and there also are many variations and house rules used in play.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eRook\u003c\/strong\u003e has also been referred to as \u003cem\u003eMissionary Poker\u003c\/em\u003e.
